How to Find Your Professional Passion
This guy is passionate about being a thug!
And more importantly, he's found a way to make a career of it.
If he can, so can you!
Believe it or not, there is some debate about whether or not it is important to your quality of life to find a career that you're passionate about and enjoy. Penelope Trunk, author of The Brazen Careerist blog, states "One of the worst pieces of career advice that I bet each of you has not only gotten but given is to "do what you love." I don't completely disagree with her post in its entirety, but do feel that it sure is nice if you love or at least mildly enjoy what you spend eight hours a day doing. Does that mean that you will only be happy if you earn money doing what it is that you're passionate about? No. However, it is definitely worth a shot, because ‘Why not?' Calling All Educators... Find Your Passion!
That is an odd way to start off a post written for educators, because we all assume that if you are in education that that is your "passion". We are conditioned to think that every education worker has an undying passion for their work, but I question that. Here's why:
1. The current public education system is a bit archaic and can sap your creativity and individuality. Let's be honest, public education from the classroom to the highest levels of administration is an old model. You can enter the system as a creative thinker with innovative ideas and techniques, and then quickly fall into a cookie-cutter role.
2. I believe that everyone wants to do ‘something' of their own and it can be hard to take ownership of your work within a district.
